Some might say it’s luck that got me here.
The truth is, it’s far from that.
I’d like to think my journey is a colorful one, filled with hurdles and puddles I had to jump and cross to get to where I am.
It was difficult, and sometimes lonely.
But you know what? All those challenges made the fruits of my labor so much sweeter.

It was difficult, and sometimes lonely.
But you know what? All those challenges made the fruits of my labor so much sweeter.
What I thought would be a weakness turned out to be my biggest blessing.
I was born with strabismus, a condition that made me cross-eyed. And because I looked different, I was bullied relentlessly at school.
Children can be cruel at times.
As much as I’d like to deflect all their hurtful words, it affected how I saw myself.
But what I thought would be a weakness turned out to be my biggest blessing.
It made me more resilient and thick-skinned, traits that helped me become the independent woman I am today.

My dad was a huge influence in my life.
He was the first person to believe in me and what I can do.
He also taught me the value of grit, perseverance, and learning from mistakes. He made me believe that I can do anything. All I needed to do was put my heart and soul into it to make it happen. I remember when he told me, “Tough times don’t last. Tough people do.” True enough, tough times came to our family.

My mom got diagnosed with hypertension and stage 4 kidney failure.
Shortly thereafter was the diagnosis of my dad for tuberculosis and diabetes when mom passed.
And despite my siblings and I’s effort to gather funds, it still wasn’t enough to pay both their medical and funeral bills.
I tried my best to get promoted at work as a customer service agent, but office politics made it tough.
So I started searching for ways to earn money outside my corporate work, from the entertainment industry (film and theater production assistance), to online freelancing.

My mom got diagnosed with hypertension and stage 4 kidney failure.
Shortly thereafter was the diagnosis of my dad for tuberculosis and diabetes when mom passed.
And despite my siblings and I’s effort to gather funds, it still wasn’t enough to pay both their medical and funeral bills.

I came across platforms like O-Desk (now Upwork), Freelancer.com, and OnlineJobs.PH among others.
I tried my luck and created profiles on all platforms I could find and applied for tasks I didn’t know.
I was confident I could learn as I go, even if I had no idea how to do it.
Finally, I got hired as a data entry specialist and earned some extra cash at $1 per hour.
I got hired for more jobs, learned more skills, and found clients who trusted me enough to teach me what they know.
My “sideline” went so well that I was making more than my day job. It was only a matter of time when I needed to hire more people to help me with all the tasks I needed to do.
